Digital Sketch/Paint try out....

This is a digital sketch/paint (done in Photoshop) after reading a Ben Caldwell tutorial. Not sure if it was a success. Any advice?

X-Mas 2009

This pic got started at a Drink and Draw. The subject was X-Mas Pageant - which somehow meant Pin-Up girl to me.

It was actually nice to get away from the computer - going back to watercolor. I had originally finished the piece with a yellow background - but it was suggested that a greenish-blue would work better. I don't know, I think both might work....

Oh and I STILL HATE THE HOLIDAYS....but a pin-up girl makes it easier to deal with...

Costume Carnival 09 - Part One

These were all sketches done at the Academy of Art University's Costume Carnival - an event put on by the Illustration Department. Some of these models I've gotten to draw for years now. Not a bad way to spend Halloween - considering I wasn't going to get out - working the night shift at the 2D lab these days...

Sketching Co-Workers at B&N....

Often at B&N I would sketch my co-workers. Most of the time I was on break with Brit-lee, and I must have made dozens of throw away sketches of her on small brown bags or napkins. Eventually I remembered to have my sketchbook with me on a few days. Above is a sketch of Brit-lee and guest starring Jill. Below, another sketch of Brit-lee - that girl reads, she reads a lot.

Halloween 2009....

Well the holiday gauntlet is upon us....

I Survived Comic-Con 2009 - Finished

Ugh...finally done.... Originally this was to commemorate "surviving" Comic-Con...but I think it count towards surviving this damn year...I just want it over already....

Zombie Mummy Girl Lives!!!

A little early for Halloween - but I had this idea of combining two "monsters" - Zombie & Mummies. Kinda similar to the "evil" cheerleader" I did earlier - in fact both came from the same sketch pad.

Still trying to figure out a "finished" look that I'm happy with. It's alright....but I wonder about getting rid of the black lines and just going with colored lines for that colored shape look - eh, I don't know.

Maybe I'll use it as a Halloween card for this year.

Crap...So When did I post last?

Ugh...it's been several crappy months....
If you're like me you walk away from Comic-Con with a ton of flyers & post-cards that you put in a bag and forget all about - until you have to clean out the closet to make room for another bag. One of the cards I "re-discovered" was for some sort of "evil" cheerleader (which is redundant - as anyone in "cheer" - has to be a sadist) - but it made for a fun sketch in front of the TV, as I continue to hack up my lung from the summer cold that JUST WON'T QUIT.

Sketch of my Romans - trying to cheer myself out of being sick. It didn't quiet work....
Cleaned up and inked - then Photoshop - of some girls from my the limbo that is my sketch book. Still not happy with the finished line quality....
Here was the finished sketch I worked from. These characters had been sitting in a sketch book for ....far too long. Seeing as I wanted something to experiment with I thought I'd give them a try. I'll try posting the sketch book pages some time in the future - hopefully not months away.
Yeah - hopelessly addicted to the "Donna Reed" show.....I keep trying to make time for myself - so I can sketch the show (via Hulu) - but something always comes up....damn.

Stretching Out the Drawing Skills

I'm often told that I need to stretch my drawing skills and I often do try various styles, but most of the time I do go towards my favored leanings (I still wouldn't say I have a style of my own yet). The funny thing is that when I do show my work to professionals - I still get a lot of confusing remarks - some will say I'm too "Disney" - others say I'm clearly "cartoony"(suggesting that I'm more Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network).

So here I thought I'd try to study as much as possible from "Kung Fu Panda". The irritating thing is trying to use 3D models as reference, I wish I could get some reference of the 2D opening sequence....that was awesome.
Bessie from "the Might B!" is pretty far away from me in terms of skills - "Sponge Bob" is even further. The one unifying crit I get all the time is my weakness in the squash and stretch department - and it seems no matter what I just can't get it.

Photoshop Sketches from the Last Few Days....

Still trying out various photoshop brushes....and blending them together....it kinda works...if I knew what I was doing....

The nice thing about going to class at Studio 2nd Street is that you're only three blocks from the beach....
Partly done from sketches of girls I see on campus - and magazine fashion ads...

Some of the horrible things I "tried" to do as a kid....
What might be one of the saddest sights in art school - some Geek checking out a lone art girl's equipment....and I really am referring to the computer....

Ugh....How long has it been????

Well - its been a while, and its been Hell as of late....a lot of headaches....
This started out as an avatar pic for a freelance project - until I realized the face I was drawing was clearly Mary-Jane Watson of Spider-man.....so I had to throw it out of the freelance pile. Ever so often I'd have a few late night hours to sketch some more on it - but adding Spidey himself has been Hell....so maybe in another few months it'll be done - or I might just throw it out....

Also - I spent a lot of time thinking over my portfolio for the last few months - and now I just don't understand how anyone at the Academy ever thought I was good enough to graduate....I swear the portfolio I built out of there and the work I've done - it's total crap. Disjointed arms, legs that are waaaaaaayyyyyyyy toooooo long, and facial features that just float on the head - ugh, and I could not see it months ago....

Now after months of working at late at night on just Scheckey and Maribelle - I think I've gotten better - but I can't figure out completely what has changed in my drawing - I'm not totally sold that I've improved enough to really get work yet - drawing cartoony stuff still doesn't come easy..just down to more months and probably, years of study before any of this stuff might work....

Animal Reporter - Character Design....

I've started these sketches so many times that I've lost track. I suppose that's common in creating characters. What drawings I have before the fire seem always so distant. And it's funny to see all mistakes in a drawing and in ideas when at the time I just couldn't get pass them at all.

This current round is better - I know there are mistakes. For now though, I just can't see them. Maybe in another month....

Wild West Storyboards....

Alright! It came out right after the second time loading! Yeah!

Here are some of storyboards from class at Ol' Studio 2nd Street. A few more panels to go to finish - but I thought I'd share this now - as everything has been taking forever lately.....too much crap, and too little time.

Pointless Hot Chick Drawings....

A few nights ago we were throwing out some destroyed "Disney Fairies Drawing Kits" - so I kept the "how-to-draw" pamphlet - this sketch is the first result. So something good came out of those lousy kids ripping stuff up at B&N! now if they'd only go away.....

Also from a few nights ago - I was getting stressed out - and nothing, NOTHING - helps me relax more than drawing a hot chick.......now if I could only talk to them......in a non-drawing situation.....then again - I'd probably get so bored from listening to them talk that I'd just start drawing them again.....

Real Life Tales: Episode 243 - Lemen Appeal

Every so often I get questions from folks about Studio 2nd Street......and I-Phone addict Ron Lemen. Ron is a great guy.....if ever shuts up, but like ALL art teachers the man can babel on and on like a political radio pundit.

I know there has got to be some spelling mistakes in this thing....cause I no spell well......

Oh and big thank you to my guest star - Taylor Smith - a man who has endured much of "negative" thinking and lived to tell the tale....

Real Life Tales: Episode 247 - Love Thy Neighbor

Apparently I'm not the greatest when it comes to talking to women.....

I took a break today to draw out this idea....been sitting for a while in a sketchbook.....and since I finished one freelance job - I had to do anything else but stare at the other assignments.....

Bettie Page

The sketch turned out WAY better than the digital finish......not that I hate what I did on the finish - it just doesn't reflect the sketch. This is the eternal problem I seem to face - I can create better sketches than I can finishes - or at least that's my opinion.

It's a New Year.....again?

Ugh...another year? Crrraaaaaaaaaaaaappppppppppppppppppppppp.......... Well this wasn't too far off from my EXCITING New Year's Eve....spent watching the Twilight Zone Marathon. Course if it had  been Scheckey sprawled out on the couch then he would have at least had Maribelle keep him company.

I went though numerous layers on this digital Photoshop sketch. The best part of having the Cintqi is that it allows me to use it just like an animation light-box. So far I'm happy with most of the sketch - except Scheckey's legs and arms. They're not bad - but the design could be a little better. Hopefully I'll find some time to really sketch out the mechanics of the appendages.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments on the last post! Great to know some people look this place over.

Here's hoping that 2009 will have more opportunities than 2008.
